He started to play the violin at the age of 5 in Budapest. His first violin teacher was Nándor Banyák, later continuing his studies with László Szatmári. In 1986 he was accepted at the Preparatory Class of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in the class for Prominent Talents where his teacher was Miklós Szenthelyi. He continued his higher studies there as well, being taught by famous masters, including Miklós Szenthelyi, Sándor Devich, Géza Hargitai, Géza Németh (members of the Bartók Quartet) He took part in courses of famous masters like Josef Gingold, Lorand Fenyves and Dénes Zsigmondy. He graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in 1966.
In 1990 Miklós Szenthelyi invited him to play in the Hungarian Virtuoso Chamber Orchestra, of which he is still a member. Here he performed with Kálmán Berkes, Béla Drahos, Jenő Jandó, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Zoltán Kocsis, Ervin Nagy, György Győriványi Ráth and Tamás Vásáry. In 1995 he met a bassoonist, Géza Hargitai. Since then he has been the member of the Corelli Trio and Consort. Both abroad and in Hungary they have given numerous concerts and played at several festivals. Their repertoire includes music from the Baroque to contemporary.
Besides classical music, he often plays jazz. As a member of the Sturcz Quartett he regularly plays at Al Di Meola’s concerts. He has played with such famous musicians as the Buena Vista Social Club, Ibrahim Ferrer and Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull’s flautist and singer, Chris Thompson, Manfred Mann’s singer, Bill Evans, the jazz saxophonist, Tina Harrods and the Orszáczky Jackie Band. Since 2010 he has been a member of the ByHeart quartett, founded by Máté Pálhegyi, flautist. In their repertoire there are their own special interpretations of jazz and classic pieces. He finds it important that his students study music to a high standard .They should hear good examples of classical music, beautifully performed so that they have a good example to follow. He has been the violin teacher of the Albert Kocsis Music School since 2005.
Csonka Gábor - Hegedű
1972-ben született Salgótarjánban. Zenész családból származik, édesapja klarinétművész. 5 éves korában kezdett hegedülni Budapesten. 1986-ban felvételt nyert a Zeneakadémia Előkészítő Tagozatára, ahol a Kiemelt Tehetségek Osztályában Szenthelyi Miklós tanítványa lett. Felsőfokú tanulmányait ugyanitt a Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetemen folytatta olyan kiváló tanárok irányítása alatt, mint Szenthelyi Miklós Kossuth díjas hegedűművész, és a Bartók vonósnégyes tagjai. Olyan híres művészek kurzusain vett részt, mint Josef Gingold, Fenyves Loránd és Zsigmondy Dénes.
1996-ban kapott művészi diplomát a Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetemen. 1990-ben Szenthelyi Miklós meghívta játszani a Magyar Virtuózok Kamarazenekarba, amelynek azóta is tagja. Olyan híres zenészekkel, karmesterekkel játszott együtt mint Berkes Kálmán, Drahos Béla, Jandó Jenő, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Kocsis Zoltán, és Vásáry Tamás. 1995-ben alapította Hargitai Géza fagottművésszel a Corelli Consort-ot. Az együttes repertoárja a reneszánsztól a kortárs zenéig terjed.
A klasszikus zene mellet a jazz is közel áll hozzá. A Sturcz-quartett tagjaként rendszeresen játszik Al Di Meola koncertjein. Olyan híres muzsikusokkal szerepelt együtt mint a Buena Vista Social Club és Ibrahim Ferrer, Ian Anderson a Jethro Tull énekes fuvolistája, Chris Thompson a Manfred Mann énekese, Bill Evans jazz szaxofonos, Tina Harrods és az Orszáczky Jackie Band. 2010-től a By Heart Quartett tagja, repertoárjukon klasszikus és jazz darabok szerepelnek,egyedi megformálásban.
